refugees {code} is a non-profit organization offering refugees a free programming education, so that they can live a self-determined life through qualified work.

The program
The program is designed for unemployed refugees who live in Vienna and want to work in software development. Besides computer science training, the program aims to integrate refugees into the labor market by supporting them with soft skill workshops in leadership, so they can build a life of their own choosing. The course itself is a well balanced mix of 70% face-to-face lessons and 30% self study via e-learning. The core of the programming course is the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) CS50x from Harvard University, which helps to learn the fundamentals and get practical experience in C, Python and JavaScript. The additionally included soft skills workshops in Leadership and Intercultural Competence strengthen their self confidence and understanding of cultural differences. Furthermore students have the opportunity to specialize in front- or backend web development. After the 9 month course which concludes with a certificate from the University of Technology Vienna and Harvard University, the students will be placed in a three-month internship were they can apply their learned skills on real world issues.
